No trip to Cambodia is complete without a stay on the island of Koh Rong… A sort boat ride that runs twice a day takes you to the beautiful, chilled out beach town… well by town I mean there are a handful of bars and hostels on the beach… you can book a place to go before you get there at one of the Sihanoukville travel agents or send your friend on the early boat to book you all in… Well done Alex… She booked us 8 beds in Lazy Boys.
Having recently suffered a fire, the hostel was missing a wall but with mosquito nets, a discount of $1 a night per bed and free beer, we were definitely not going to complain ! The staff were lovely and the BBQ although a bit ‘pricey’ for Cambodia at $5, was enough for two and AMAZING.
By day you can chill on the beach or snorkel… Walk up the ‘mountain’ and rock climb down to long beach, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen… If you are too exhausted you can get a boat back to the main beach for $3. It is quite a hike.
There is no mains electric on Koh Rong, everything is run of generators… It’s a refreshing change from the Wifi, social media world that backpacking has started to become. Night time is filled with hanging on the beach with cocktails and comfy chairs, we did manage to find one bar with a dance floor and music until late… There is nothing not to like about this amazing little piece of paradise. The people that work and own property there want to keep it this way so I hope and I feel that this place will stay this beautiful and perfect for a long time.
