10 kilometres north of the crazy party town of Kuta in Bali, Indonesia is 10 km of beach on the south coast. Canggu has a much more relaxing atmosphere of dining, culture and beach fun.
I had partied too hard in Kuta and It had left me broken. I had a stomach infection and needed to relax before I flew to the Philippines.
Canggu was perfect. Quiet but not too quiet. The black sand beaches were beautiful and the surf perfect waves mesmerizing. Although too weak to partake, watching the surfers at sunrise and sunset was brilliant. Some of the locals were amazing. Why are they not professional surfers!?
After being a bit disappointed by Kuta and Gili Trawangan, Canggu restored my faith in Bali. This is how I imagined it to be.
Canggu offers something for everyone. Surf lessons. Sightseeing with the rice paddies and temples along with great restaurants and bars. Although not as cheap as some parts of Bali, Canggu was by no means expensive. Even on my backpacker budget. There is accommodation and food to cater for all budgets. We stayed at The Apartments, Canggu a beautiful studio apartment for a very reasonable price! We had our own swimming pool and the owner was lovely. She arranged everything for us from drinking water, to a lift to the airport when we left.
The local area is full of boutique cafes and shops. My favourite place to eat, Belenut, served
amazing organic food. This includes burgers and salads and the most epic cheesecakes. Including flavours like Mango passion and Banana Nutella!
Having never ridden a scooter before, I chose Canggu to learn (Sorry Mum).
The roads were quiet and pretty straight forward. I am now an awesome scooter driver. I take no responsibility, however, if you choose to learn there also and are not as lucky as me.
This little town was certainly the Bali I had seen in guide books and television shows. Beautiful and not over run with tourists.
If you are in Bali, pay Canggu a visit. You will not be disappointed.
