People probably won’t have much sympathy for you when you tell them you’re suffering from a serious case of travelling blues after your amazing long trip, but I can tell you first hand that post-travel depression is real.
As much as I like my life in England, my friends, my family, and even my job, I never handle the end of a trip well.
Travel is a drug and coming home is a lot like going through withdrawal. You just finished having the time of your life. New experiences and high on adventure, constantly surrounded my new friends and new wonders do adore. And now you are home. Its like the hangover of all hangovers! My first morning back from my first solo trip to Asia, I released I did not have 6 other people sharing the sink while I brushed my teeth an that I was alone in my flat so I did what any grown woman would do, I sat on the floor and cried. My whole body ached and at that point I knew I was addicted to travelling.
It took me a while, but I managed to get over my depression. Here are a few things that helped me:
Write about your trip
Getting sucked in to working on my travel blog really helped. I could relive the tales over and over, lose myself in photo editing and spend hours portraying the best trip ever and hopefully encouraging other to travel and experience the wonders I had.
It’s always bikini time
So you’ve got to go back to work but this doesn’t mean you can’t still wear your bikini… If your, ahem, assets allow it why not wear your favourite bikini under your work clothes. No-one will know and it will make you giggle to yourself despite still being back at work.
I know it is cliché, but collecting up your photos,trip tickets, postcards and other memorabilia from the trip and putting it all together in a
scrap book can really help you feel better about being back at home. Rather than wallow in self pitty that it is all over, drool over all of the pictures of hot guys you met, how great your tan was and how amazing you looked in that bikini after only eating chicken and rice for 3 months.
Take inspiration from your trip
Learn to do the things that fascinated you about your new friends. Take a language course or photograph lessons. I am trying to learn French and Spanish. It is not going very well but hey, I am trying!
Visit everyone you haven’t seen in months and keep your brain from thinking about everyone you left behind. Make lunch dates, go to the cinema, have your friends round for dinner, just surround yourself with your favourite people. Do not be alone. They’ll be bound to take your mind off any post travel depression and make you smile again.
Cookies, cakes, lasagnas. Bake all the foods you missed when you were away!
Google recipes and make your favourite travelling cuisines. This helped my get over withdraw from my other addiction Thai Red Curry. I am now a wizz at cooking it. The mess I leave behind is not as exciting though.
If all else fails… Book a flight or start planning your next big adventure
While you probably should not encourage an addict to start planning their next fix, travel is a drug that’s completely ok to be addicted to, so plan away. Even if it is over a year away, it is a great thing to direct positive energy towards rather than being sad about your trip being over.
